Sumaré House by Isay Weinfeld Arquitecto
by SchultzeWORKS »
December 17th, 2009

Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld designed this house for a graphic designer in São Paulo with a studio situated below street level opening onto a garden.

Called Sumaré House and completed in 2007, the two-storey house features a studio and a long étagère to display the owners work.

The project also includes a space for ballet and a swimming pool on the upper floor, next to the clients bedroom.

See our previous story about the Havianas store in São Paulo by Isay Weinfeld.

Here’s some more information from Isay Weinfeld:

Sumaré house is located in São Paulo, and was designed for a graphic designer.

The client wanted a spacious house, where she could work, exercise, entertain friends and, of course, live in.

Thus, we had to fit an atelier, a swimming pool and a space for ballet routines into the house, along with ample entertaining areas, two bedrooms and all other rooms suitable to a residence.

The plot is not a small one (700 sq mt), but due to construction (height) restriction laws, the building should not exceed 2 floors, and an underground floor was necessary.

There, we placed the caretaker’s quarters and the atelier – as both areas open onto small but nice lawns, one does not feel like being underground at all.

On the middle floor, a few steps above street level, there are the sitting and dining rooms, the kitchen and a larger lawn.

In the living room, we designed a long étagère so the owner could display her collection, ranging from works of art to design and vintage objects.

On the upper floor, there are the bedrooms – hers and a guest’s – and the “facilities” for physical exercising: ballet and swimming.

As this is a space she meant for private use mainly, she liked it when we suggested having it by her bedroom, enclosed only by a screen of pre-cast concrete blocks, through which she would be able to see the city skyline far away.

Above all, on the uppermost level, there is a wood-decked outdoors entertaining area, perfect for a get together, by day or by night.

Gimpo Art Hall / G.Lab*

Gimpo Art Hall / G.Lab*

Situated on the southern bank of the Han River, Gimpo is a city in the process of transforming from an agricultural economy toward a consumer-based economy.   Seoul architects G.Lab*’s, of Gansam Partners, proposal for the Gimpo Art Hall embraces the fact that the city is emerging as a contemporary regional hub and the design also reflects upon the region’s history.

More about the project and more images after the break.

Located on the eastern end of a city block, the art hall emphasizes pedestrian access by incorporating a friendly walk into the design.  The building mass is also lifted above the street level to create a covered pedestrian plaza.

Aesthetically, the structure sprouts from the ground, branches, multiplies, and envelopes the building.  This structural-aesthetic reinforces Gimpo’s roots and modernization, while creating an interesting play on light and shadow.  A Floating Theater nested inside the building volume allows for varying degrees of apertures which punctuate views from the interior and reveal the cityscape below.

This project is related to a single-family detached home developed in an area designated as “Forest Space”. The project considers the environmental characteristics and the remote horizontal line where it can be seen Ria de Aveiro, a river stream.

The project contains a vast program in a contemporary language, considering an implanting area of 271 sqm. It develops in two volumes, both intersecting, one of higher dimensions, with two floors, and one of smaller scale, with a single floor.

The ground floor of the higher volume is dedicated to the social area of the house and also contains a garage for two cars. The upper level is reserved for the private area of the family.

The smaller volume has the remaining part of the requested program, which basically contemplates the game room, an interior swimming pool and a Turkish bath room.

In the area surrounding the house, it was developed a platform that expands the areas related to the living-room and the kitchen, and from which there is an access to the exterior swimming pool that enables a full contemplation of the distant but magnificent view of Aveiro.
